According to the City of Dayton Officials, an off duty fire department member reported smoke coming from Hiwassee Packaging. After further investigation from the local fire department, it was found that there were two fires in the building.
Both fires have been extinguished at this time according to officials and the “Shelter in place” notice has been lifted.

City of Dayton Fire-Rescue and Hamilton County Haz-Mat are currently on scene working a Chlorine leak at Hiwassee Packaging located at 124 Appalachian Dr.
An alert from the Rhea County Emergency Management was sent out to area residents at 11:45 AM via Hyper-reach advising them to shelter in place and to turn off ventilation vents.
The area is completely blocked off to the public at this time and officials are advising to stay clear of the area until further notice.
We are still unclear of what started the leak or how big the leak is at this time. We have also not heard of any injuries reported with this incident at this time. You can count on us to keep you updated with information as we get it.
