The Governor’s Volunteer Star Award, the highest volunteer award in the State of Tennessee, was awarded to Leon Locke from Spring City. The Governor’s Volunteer Star Award is a high achievement aimed to highlight people in the community who are dedicated to volunteering in their community through service.
“Leon is the perfect example of what the Governor’s Volunteer Star Award’s purpose truly is,” stated Bailey Hufstetler, the Rhea County Governor’s Volunteer Star Award Coordinator. “Leon has volunteered countless hours through his many years of volunteer service.”
Leon has volunteered with the Rhea County Rescue Squad for many years, is a current board member for the Spring City Chamber of Commerce, the current Vice Mayor for the Town of Spring City, and also works in the Parks and Recreation Department for Rhea County.
This is not the first award that Locke has received to highlight his volunteer service to his community. In 2019, the Spring City Chamber of Commerce awarded Locke with the “Lucille Mayberry Award,” a local award highlighting volunteers and their dedication to the community.
Locke was able to travel to Nashville attend the Governors Volunteer Star Award Ceremony and receive his award alongside 68 other individuals all across the state who received the same award. 1 individual from each county is eligible to be nominated and receive this award each year.
“We want to thank Mr. Locke for his dedication to his community through his volunteer service by awarding him this award,” says Hufstetler. “We hope that him receiving this award will show him our appreciation for him and his service.”
The Governors Volunteer Star Award is a program through Volunteer Tennessee, a non-profit organization designed to promote volunteerism in the community.
