The Spring City Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual banquet on Tuesday September 15 and it was a HUGE success according to Chamber officials. With a new location different from years past, and being outside against the colder temperatures, that didn’t stop the community from coming out and supporting the Chamber.
“We were able to raise the full dollar amount on our scholarship program awards with the money raised by our raffle with La-Z-Boy recliner and the auction items we received from our members,” Spring City Chamber President Robbie Harvey said. “This is exciting because we haven’t been able to raise the scholarship amount in several years,” Harvey continued.
In years past the banquet has been held at Wolf Creek Baptist Church and Spring City United Methodist Church. This is the first time the Chamber has tried to hold this event outside.
“We all really enjoyed the more laid back atmosphere this year,” Harvey stated.
The dinner was catered by the Rhea County High School culinary team.
Wade Sims, a local musician, kept the guest entertained with wonder acoustic music. “He almost had us forgetting about how cold it turned out to be,” Harvey joked. “It was a great night under the stars in Spring City.”
The Chamber is an all volunteer organization with the exception of a part time Business Manager who helps run the day to day operations of the chamber alongside an all volunteer board of directors. The chamber understands how important volunteerism is and how it strengthens the community.
Every year the Chamber chooses an individual to receive the “Lucille Maybery Award,” an award that goes to individuals who exemplify a heart for their community through volunteerism. The Lucille Maybery Award is a volunteer service award named after Lucille Maybery, a former chamber board member and very active volunteer in the Spring City community. It is a true honor to receive this award.
This year’s Lucille Mayberry award was awarded to Barbara Whittaker. Mrs. Whittaker has a long history of hard work and volunteerism for the Spring City community. She spent many years shaping young students as a school teacher in the Rhea County school system, and a very active member of the Rhea County Rescue Squad.
“She deserves all the recognition after a long life of service,” Robbie Harvey stated.
The Spring City Chamber of Commerce is located in the historical Spring City Depot on Front Street. They have a robust group of volunteers that make up the Board of Directors.
