Rhea County Election Officials are gearing up for another exciting election coming up in March of next year! On March 5 2024, Rhea County citizens will go to the polls and vote for who they want to be their next Road Supervisor, Property Assessor, and School Board Members for districts 2, 4, 6, and 8. March 5th is only the Republican and Democrat Primary, however, as of right now all candidates that have qualified to run are running on the Republican ticket. Unless they have challengers on the Democratic ticket, this primary will determine these positions.
Incumbent Glen Varner has announced that he is running for re-election. He is being challenged by former County Highway employee, Rick Wilkey. Incumbent Debbie Byrd is running for re-election for Rhea County Property Assessor with no challenger as of press time.
In the school board elections, voters that live in district 2, 4, 6 and 8 will vote for someone who they wish to represent them on the school board. Here is the following list of individuals that have qualified for each district:
District 2: Benny Joe McCoy- Incumbent
District 4: Harold “Bimbo” McCawley- Incumbent
Heath Smith
District 6:
Wayne Cox- Incumbent
District 8:
Chip Pendergrass- Incumbent
All candidates are running on the republican ticket for the school board election.
If you are interested in running for any of these positions, you have until Thursday December 14, 2023 at 12 NOON to turn in your qualifying petition. Anyone that has turned in their qualifying petitions to run for this election, can drop out of the election if they decide to, as long as they do so before Thursday December 21st at 12 NOON.
Early voting will be Wednesday February 14 thru Tuesday February 27.
